The Dolomites, Italy

The Dolomites are spectacular, but the map can be deceptive: neighbouring valleys may require long drives. Choosing the right accommodation base is therefore one of the most important family-trip decisions.

The Dolomites, Italy
Typical durationTypical planning range: 6–9 nights
Accommodation basesOnly 1–2 bases; e.g. Val Gardena / Alta Badia / Cortina depending on route
SeasonSummer and early autumn; lifts and trails operate seasonally

Who it suits

  • Families who love big scenery and cable cars
  • Children who can combine short walks with easier days
  • Travellers who prefer doing one area well rather than covering everything

How to plan it well

  • Choose the valley before choosing the hotel
  • Build the day around one main lift/trail
  • Keep one weather-flexible day
  • Check driving times between valleys, not map distance alone

What I try to avoid

  • A geographically “central” hotel that is poor for actual roads
  • Changing valleys every day
  • Buying lift products before knowing which lifts the family will use
Important: lifts, trails and attractions may change operating dates or hours by season and weather. Recheck before booking.
